A Word about Exercise Programs
There are essentially two kinds or types of exercises: isometric and aerobic. Isometric exercises build up muscle mass and aerobic exercises build up our heart and lungs. By increasing our heart rate through aerobic exercise, we increase the strength of our heart muscle which makes our heart more productive and more functional. Exercises such as; running, walking, hiking, yoga, tai-chi, and cross country skiing to name a few, are all excellent examples of what can be termed aerobic exercises.
By engaging in isometric exercises, which build up muscle mass, we increase our strength and reduce our chance of injury. A variety of isometric exercise routines are described in the Exercises section below.
There are a variety of formulas to help determine your heart rate target zone. A general and simple formula is to subtract your age from 180.
E.g. 68 (age) - 180 = 112 beats per minute (heart rate target)

A Word About Nutritional Options
When talking nutrition, what and how much you eat are the key. Losing weight is a result of your calorie intake and calorie output. Gaining weight is the same. So, to lose weight you must eat fewer calories than you expend daily and to gain weight you must eat more calories than you expend daily.
Radical diets don't work! What is needed instead is a balanced approach. If you feel you're overweight, stop and think for a moment about how long it's taken you to get to this point. Your obesity didn't happen overnight, and it won't disappear overnight either.
